Fleet Week steams into downtown SD

The local units of the military will mobilize on Saturday, Oct. 5. Aircraft carriers, guided missile destroyers, frigates, Coast Guard vessels and military aircraft will converge on San Diego Bay for the Port of San Diego Sea-n-Air Parade, a highlight of San Diego Fleet Week 2002.

Hoping to heal her pain and sorrow from the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., Eileen Schwartz grabbed her camera soon thereafter and began taking photos of San Diegans proudly displaying their patriotism for their beloved country and in memory of the thousands lost.

             “It allowed me to feel united with the country and feel less pain with the tragedy,” Schwartz recalled. “I also felt that the patriotism may disappear, and I just wanted to be sure it was going to be documented.”

University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Professor George Lewis’s dad has bragging rights at the McDonald’s on Chicago’s South Side where the Lewis pere sips coffee and discusses the news with his cronies each morning.

            George made the national news Sept. 24 when the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced that he is a recipient of a tax-free 2002 MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the “genius” award.
